Position Summary

The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The custodian performs routine cleaning and maintenance duties throughout assigned school facilities and assists with the preparation of facilities for daily operations and special events.

The successful candidate will be dependable, hardworking, detail-oriented, and able to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other assigned areas.

Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, sanitize, and disinfect floors and surfaces.

Empty and properly dispose of trash and recycling.

Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish restroom supplies.

Clean windows, doors, walls, furniture, fixtures, and other assigned areas.

Maintain floors through sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other appropriate cleaning methods.

Safely operate cleaning equipment, tools, and machinery.

Properly use, store, and handle cleaning chemicals and supplies.

Monitor and maintain adequate supplies and notify the supervisor when supplies need to be replenished.

Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms, furniture, and equipment for school activities and special events.

Assist with maintaining outdoor areas and entrances as assigned.

Report maintenance, safety, security, or repair concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

Assist with minor facility-related tasks as directed.

Maintain assigned areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.

Follow all district safety, sanitation, security, and emergency procedures.

Secure assigned areas and ensure doors and other access points are properly secured as required.

Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district matters.

Interact with students, staff, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.

Attend required training and meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or appropriate administrator.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Previous custodial, maintenance, housekeeping, or related experience preferred but not required.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Dependable, punctual, and responsible.

Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and supervisors.

Ability to operate custodial equipment safely.

Ability to properly handle and use cleaning chemicals and supplies.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Must successfully complete required background checks and screenings.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including:

Standing and walking for extended periods.

Bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.

Lifting and carrying supplies and equipment.

Pushing and pulling carts, equipment, and furniture.

Repetitive movements associated with cleaning tasks.

Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, as required.

Ability to safely perform assigned duties in various school environments.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in school buildings and may include classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, storage areas, and outdoor areas.

The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, varying temperatures, and other conditions commonly associated with custodial work. Appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment must be used as required.

Work Schedule

Schedule will be determined by district and campus needs. The position may require work before or after regular school hours, as well as occasional evenings or weekends for special events or facility needs.

Compensation

Compensation will be based on the Thorndale ISD adopted pay schedule and applicable experience .
